Damasteel stainless Damascus steel for knives

Damasteel stands for modern stainless Damascus steel with very high manufacturing quality. Through the PM process a particularly fine and homogeneous microstructure is achieved. In practice this results in very good edge retention and toughness, and Damasteel shows a clearly high contrast pattern after etching. With us you will find DS93X for knives, Damacore with a hard core layer and decorative outer layers as well as DS95X for design and jewelry. All variants are available in many cross sections and can be cut to size per centimeter.

Why buy Damasteel at Gobec

We are an authorized Damasteel dealer. We keep a large stock with many patterns and dimensions. Cutting is usually per centimeter. We ship quickly for in stock sizes and provide expert advice on heat treatment and etching.

Variants at a glance

  • DS93X is stainless martensitic Damascus steel for blades. It is based on the alloyed stainless steels RWL34 and PMC27 and is the versatile choice for kitchen and outdoor knives.
  • Damacore combines a hard core layer such as DC18N or DC21R with outer layers of RWL34 and PMC27, which results in a distinctive appearance.
  • DS95X is austenitic and suitable for jewelry and design. This variant is not hardenable and highly corrosion resistant.

Heat treatment reference values for DS93X

Austenitize at 1030°C to 1090°C, quench preferably in air or vacuum, alternatively in oil.
Protection from oxygen is required, for example with protective gas, vacuum, or foil.

Temper two hours at 160°C to 205°C, depending on the desired hardness, temper twice if needed.

FAQ about Damasteel

What is Damasteel?

Damasteel is a stainless PM Damascus steel. Production is unique because the Damascus is created directly from powder rather than being welded from sheets as is usually done.

Is Damasteel stainless?

Yes, Damasteel is highly corrosion resistant. Careful handling preserves its appearance for a very long time.

Which thickness suits Damasteel for kitchen knives and outdoor knives?

For kitchen knives the typical range is 1.5 to 3.2 mm, and the most common thickness is 2.5 mm. For outdoor blades a blade thickness of 3.2 mm or more is usually chosen.

How do I achieve strong pattern contrast when etching?

The finer the scratch pattern before etching the better the contrast. A mirror polish is ideal. As an etchant hydrochloric acid works well and provides the highest contrast on Damasteel DS93X.
