The Rex 121 from CPM in the USA is probably the maximum in wear resistance that can still be used for a knife. Due to its very high carbide content, it is significantly less prone to rust than conventional carbon steel.


The American CPM Rex 121 is an extremely high-alloyed powder metallurgy carbon steel.

CPM Rex 121 hardening:

  • Hardening temperature: 1070°C (air)
  • Tempering: 2 x 2 hours at 550°C
  • Hardness: ~70 HRC
