Temperature chalk, temperature measuring stick / temperature indicator stick.
Used to check whether a specific temperature has been reached or exceeded.
In knife making, it can be used to monitor whether the edge exceeds a critical temperature (e.g., tempering temperature) during sharpening. To do this, mark one side of the bevel with the chalk, then sharpen the opposite side. After sharpening, check the marked side—if the temperature has been reached, the line will melt or disappear.
Temperature chalks originally come from the welding sector and have been used there for many years to monitor preheating temperatures. Normally, the component is heated and the chalk is briefly touched to the surface. As soon as the set temperature is reached, the line visibly melts away. In knife making, it is also very useful for soldering bolsters/guards as a control.
Temperature chalk is a chalk-based product and, by nature, does not adhere as well as paint. Therefore, for example, it does not stick to the blade flat or ricasso, but it does adhere to the edge. Depending on the surface, grind pattern, and cleanliness, adhesion may vary, so each user should experiment in their own setup to find the best way to apply and adhere the chalk. You can try coarse and high-gloss polished finishes at the edge to improve chalk adhesion. Only small amounts are needed, as shown in the product images, since the chalk changes significantly.
This allows you to see whether the chosen abrasive in combination with the sharpening method is overheating the edge during sharpening.
